Don’t know what position to run for?

Look at our member or outreach overview pages for a brief synopsis of most of the positions or look at this document for the exact responsibilities of each position.

Otherwise:

Looking for more professional experience? Consider Technical Communications (Website Design/Computer Science), Professional Development (Contacting Companies & Organizing workshops with professional development resources at UW and the CoE), or Boeing – Elect (to gain hands-on engineering and project management experience).

What to give back to the community? Consider Community Service (volunteering for organizations around campus), Girl Scouts (organizing badge days for young girls), School Outreach (volunteering and running SWENext programs at local high-schools), or Engineering Tomorrow’s Careers Camp (summer camp for high schoolers all over)

Want to create stronger bonds on campus? Consider Mentoring (creating fun social events for SWE and organizing our mentoring families)

Don’t like planning events or want a more behind-the-scenes role? Consider Marketing (control our social media accounts and maybe try out some fun graphic design), Fundraising (reach out to local businesses to run fundraising events, create merch to sell, or anything else you can think of), or you can run for one of our Executive Positions!

Tips for Running

1. Attend the Officer Election Information Session!

Monday, April 4th from 6:30-7:30 pm in 1410 Engineering Drive, room 85.

If you are interested in running for an officer position or are still deciding between positions, please attend our Spring Officer Election Information Session. Our current officers will discuss the responsibilities of their position and answer any questions you have!

2. Reach out to the Officer!

It is also highly recommended that you reach out to the current officer for each position you are running for to ask them about their position. It shows that you are interested and that you’ve thought about the various roles. Don’t know how to contact them? Check the Exec and Officer Pages of the website for each officer’s email or LinkedIn, look at weekly our office hours and drop into the zoom room, or join our Slack and DM us or ask a question in the general chat!

Shadow an Officer

3. Run!

Don’t be afraid to run for a position, everyone has to start somewhere and anyone can be elected. We encourage everyone eligible for an officer position to run. We will be electing 18 positions to be on the officer team for the upcoming Fall semester! No previous officer experience is required to run. We are always looking to add new, enthusiastic members to our officer team.

How to Run:

  • You must be a paid SWE member to run. Find instructions here on how to become a paid member.

  • Each individual may run for up to 3 positions. If you run for multiple positions, please include a ranked list in your submission to be used if you win multiple positions.

  • Create a Google slide for each position that you are running for. Be sure to include the following:

    • Name, year, major

    • SWE involvement & other campus involvement

    • Qualifications

    • PHOTOS!

  • At elections, candidates will give a mini-speech (2 mins for Executive Board, 30 seconds for officers). You may send in a video to be played or a short script to be read if you cannot be present for elections.

  • Send the following materials to Jessica Lee at jrlee8@wisc.edu by Friday, April 15th at 11:59pm to be considered.

    • Google Slide for each position you are running for

    • Position Rankings

    • Absentee Speech Materials (if necessary)
