The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently searching for qualified individuals to fill an LTE Floodplain Mapping Engineer position.
The DNR excels at protecting and managing Wisconsin’s natural resources while supporting the economy and the well-being of the citizenry. In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air, and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.
The LTE Floodplain Mapping Engineer position is one such role. The position will assist with developing engineering studies for WI floodplain mapping projects. The position will perform quality assurance/quality control checks for hydrologic and hydraulic studies completed for mapping projects. These roles will help ensure that floodplain engineering studies are conducted in accordance with federal and state mapping technical guidance and standards. The position will use GIS tools to digitally incorporate floodplain study data into mapping products. DNR could work with the successful candidate and an educational institution to support an internship opportunity.

The Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI) is sponsoring a research experience for undergraduates this summer. The Research Internship in Sustainable Bioenergy (RISE) is providing bioenergy research opportunities for undergraduates from groups currently underrepresented in STEM.
Students will be paired with a CABBI mentor, conduct research, attend career development seminars, learn about the graduate school application practice, and practice STEM communication by presenting research at a summer symposium. On-campus projects are available at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Iowa State University, Penn State University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The application deadline is February 20; the program will run 10 weeks (May 28 – August 2, 2024). Students interested in gaining experience in plant biology, agronomy, synthetic biology, genetics, environmental sciences, chemical engineering, and civil engineering are welcome to apply for this program, which includes a $6,000 stipend and $2,000 housing allowance!

Phillips-Medisize will be hosting a one-day event this Summer on Thursday, 6/1/23, for sophomores to dive in and get a feel for industry. We are hoping this gives them a better insight to what they are interested in for the future and jump starts their fall recruitment efforts. Charter Communications (Spectrum’s parent company) opened applications for the next class of Spectrum Scholars; see the attached press release. Spectrum Scholars is an educational program for eligible rising college juniors with financial need. The annual program awards college students $20,000.00 each, half during their junior year and half during their senior year.
The application deadline is Friday, March 1, 2024; winners will be announced this summer, and scholarships will be awarded in summer 2024. History:
Launched in May 2020, the inaugural class of Spectrum Scholars represented 18 schools, including Brandeis University, Georgetown University, Howard University, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, University of Southern California, and Texas A&M. Fields of study included Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Networks, Marketing, Science and Technology. Several students participated in internships, including roles with Charter’s Community Impact team, Spectrum Networks, and Spectrum Enterprise.
